Stamping 95 and Branding of Pewter
At one time, pewter alloy contained lead, in quantities ranging from 10% to 40%. The items produced with this type of alloy are easy to recognise because of their very dark and dull colour, their muffled, dull sound and their extreme ductility. Since the time when lead was banned because of its harmfulness, most pewter products in Europe have been stamped, depending on their origin: PELTRO 95, ZINN 95, PEWTER 95 or ÉTAIN 95, indicating that the alloy used contained 95% tin. The 95 hallmark is still part of the stamps that we currently use to customise our pewter products, and these are its variants:
